Night of the Living Scarecrow - Colton A

Night of the Living Scarecrow

By Colton A

It was the night of Halloween, and Jackie couldn’t decide what to wear.  The three choices lay out on her bed.  One was an angel, another was a vampire and last a skeleton.  Classic, thought Jackie.  She couldn’t decide, due to her “friends” making fun of every costume she wore in the past.

After much thought, she decided to go with the vampire costume.  This would also be her first year to go trick-or-treating by herself!  But, she had to bring her little brother, Cory.  Cory was a pirate, just like the last four years he’s been trick-or-treating.

After saying good-bye to her parents, they left.  Jackie tried to avoid friends, for she still thought her costume was not cool.  They started out going to relative’s houses, like Grandma and Grandpa’s house, and Uncle Pete and Aunt Betty’s house.  They were all dressed up, too.  They all said they looked nice, but Jackie knew they were just saying that.

After receiving half a bag of candy, Jackie thought she needed more. She remembered her friend, Linda had moved recently.  Out of curiosity, she went to the new neighbor’s house (for that extra bit of candy).  Besides, if Mom asked, she was welcoming the new neighbors.

Five blocks later, they were at the new neighbor’s front door. Cory was complaining, so this would be the last stop.  When the new neighbor came to the door, he was dressed up in a scarecrow costume.  Jackie thought the costume looked scary.  His eyes were glowing bright yellow.  His mouth was turned to a frown, with fangs popped out from it.  He handed them a bowlful of candy Jackie had never seen before.  It was also all over the floor inside the house.  Quickly taking some, they left.  Then they heard a mumble from behind them.  The scarecrow sprang, biting Cory in the leg.  Cory let out a scream, and the scarecrow let go.  Cory was melting into an acid-like substance.  The scarecrow was smiling at Cory’s pain! Where Cory once was, five pieces of that unusual candy now were.  Picking them up, Jackie ran off into the night,

Telling her parents was hard.  They believed he was at a friend’s house.  Each taking a piece of Cory Candy, they started chewing it.  They said it was delicious.  At the same time, they were melting!  Jackie ran into her room, where she tried to sleep.  Maybe it was all just a dream.

When she woke up, all was quiet.  Too quiet.  Looking out the window, on the street, made in candy, were the words, “YOUR NEXT”.  That’s when she figured out, all people were turned into candy!  Turning around the scarecrow was right behind her! He bit her right in the leg.  She felt shorter and lighter.  Looking down, she noticed she was melting.  Letting out one last scream, she was also turned into five pieces of candy.

The scarecrow felt a sudden itch on his upper arm.  Using his hand, he tried to scratch it.  He suddenly remembered he had no fingernails.  He then used his teeth.  Feeling good with himself, he turned to walk away.  He found he couldn’t.  He too, was melting to nothing.

The End
